inital poster ideas

Part of our marketing involves poster designing to promote our film to it's targeted audience. this is one of the main marketing way to advertise a forthcoming movie. The poster will contain key elements about the movie without revealing too much. Our initial idea for the poster is a medium long shot of the main character sitting on a chair in front of his computer screen. We chose a dark room so that the computer lighting would seem brighter and so that the light would catch the audience's attention. The title of the movie is revealed on the computer screen. this conveys the narrative by referring to the usb stick.

First Poster Mock Ups

These were the initial ideas we had about our poster design. We decided that the one of Tom Banks in front of a computer would be the one to use as the fact that you can only see that back of his head creates mystery adhering to our thriller genre, and the computer adds levels of technology which is a key theme in our film. We will take the photograph with a Canon EOS 600D and edit it using photoshop.

initial story ideas

We want our trailer to be fast paced and exciting therefore we will use some of the best bits of the film to attract our target audience and highlight the most engrossing moments without giving away the plot. In the film our lead character Tom Banks undertakes a series of trails and challenges before the final scene where all is revealed. In our trailer we will include footage from these key moments. For example we are going to use the scene where the USB arrives in the post, we will include zoomed in shots of Tom's letter box where an anonymous letter containing the USB will arrive, this shot will leave the audience wondering what is inside this letter. The trailer will also show images of the 'torture chamber' in which Tom finds images of on the USB he receives in the post, we are either going to use photograph stills or actual video camera footage of this room along with slow and tense music. This will leave the audience wondering what this strange dark room is and what is going to take place in this room, encouraging them to want to see the film. We have decided to show this scene using CCTV footage and it will be full of glitches and will be distorted in black and white. Another scene that we will show in our trailer is the scene where Tom and his new friend Bryan attempt to destroy the body which Tom has killed. This scene will show the two men making friends and then Bryan and Tom disposing the body usingsulfuric acid. The body in this scene will be wrapped up so the audience will have no idea of the identity if this body or why they are destroying it. The next clip that will be included in our trailer is from the scene in which Tom meets Tracheal, the sister of the man he has killed. We will see Tom turning up at her house and introducing himself, as well as a clip of them falling for each other. The audience however will not know this girl is the sister of the innocent man Tom murdered so will be asking questions about their relationship.

Target audience questionnair result

The results here show that the majority of the people we asked in our questionnaire were 20-30, followed closely by 10-20 year olds.
This result indicated that most of the people we asked were males, which will understandably sway the answers we get from them, but works to our advantage because our film is aimed at a predominantly male audience.

The results here show that the majority of our audience are white Caucasians. With a larger amount of Asians and Middle Easterns than Africans.
The results here show that the majority of people we asked about films were either students at public school, university or working parents.

The resluts of this pie chart show that when we asked people about their favourite film genre the majority said that they enjoyed horror/thriller films, with drama following closely behind. This was a great result for us as our film is a crime thriller.
When we asked people how they normally watch a film, most answered saying they commonly watched films online, which was of no surprise. As a large number of the people we asked were working parents it was also of no surprise that they watched films on DVDs at home. Very few used LoveFilm, a popular film renting site and portable devices such as ipods.
Results from this pie chart indicate that most people learn about new and upcoming films from trailers, and on the Internet. Very few said they found them through newspaper's and magazine articles, implying that the Internet is becoming increasingly favoured over reading newspaper's and magazines, a lot of people now check the news and read articles online.
When we asked people what their favourite way of watching a trailer was we found the result was predominantly people watching them on you tube which again was of no surprise considering most of popular answers so far have been Internet based. No body said they saw trailers on DVDs, which was surprising considering a number of them were working parents who watched films on DVDs.
Half of the people we asked suggested that the main aspect they look for in a film was the entertainment factor. Next down from that was comedy, and then drama and intellectual stimulation, with originality holding the lowest amount of votes.

Results from this line chart show how half of the people we asked about the element most likely to attract and grab their attention towards a film was if there were big stars involved. As our film is very small budget this will not be an option for us. Reviews were also a key element of what attracts people to films.
Results from this bar graph imply that the majority of our audience say that the most annoying thing about a movie trailer is if it is unclear in regards to what the film is about and does not show the type of clips that will demonstrate the genre of the film.

The results of our questionnaire help us with the making of our film because they suggest to us what these age groups particularly like and want to see in a film and what aspects most attract them. When asking about trailers we noticed that a large amount of people said that a trailer being unclear is especially irritating. Giving too much away was also a problem, therefore we will aim to make a trailer very simple to understand without giving too much of the story away to please our target audience which is 10-30 in a broad spectrum but focusing more closely on the 18-25 year olds.

Progress so far

We have completed a number of various tasks. We have completed a trailer analysis where we have discovered what a trailer should include and the various information that would be relavant in a trailer. Some of this information includes Stars, director, genre, critics and release date. We found that many trailers will push the names of the stars, this is because stars in a film are able to bring an audience to see that particular film. This can be used a specific type of marketing. We also looked at how a trailer is targeted to specific audiences. The trailer that I personally studied was Silence of the Lambs. This genrally would have been aimed at about 25-45 year olds. Nevertheless there would have been an interest from older viewers. The reason for this may have been that there are some challenging and intricate conceptes behind the film and seen in the trailer. They are more advanced compared to a teenage thriller that may have been aimed at 15-20 year olds perhaps. An example of this may be Scream, a movie in which there are teens that are at a high school. Because there are teens in the movie, teenagers are able to relate to that. Therefore will be interested in the film, the producers will try to market to this age group for that reason. What we can learn from this as a group is that our film would be aimed at probably midway in the two groups. There are some concepts that 'make you think' along with a thrilling plot that would bring suspense into the film. Our genre of the film would be thriller and horror, being that there is a focus on a killer and a murder.

Advanced Trailer Analysis

1. In this trailer are certain things that can be represented at a connotative and denotative level, the pier for example; on a connotative level it's just a a normal pier and on a denotative level it represents their guilt and unclarity of what's going on, the pier is spooky at night and you don't know what's in the water.
Also the lipstick on a connotative level is just a normal lipstick with a specific color, on a denotative level it represents blood and in the trailer blood is related to the accident and the supposevly dead person seeking revenge.

 2. The non-verbal communications are being used quite a lot in this trailer, at the beginning they all look happy and they have peace at mind, then from the point where they hit the person with the car they all have worried facial expressions showing guilt, fear and confusion this reinforces the fact that this is a horror/thriller hybrid.

 3. In of the shots at 1:42 minutes the characters can be seen from a crane shot, this makes them look vulnerable, small and isolated as if they're being watched. This emphasizes they're vulnerability.

4. Clothing, props, mise en scene, sets and settings have been used to suit the genre, the teenagers are wearing stereotypical teenagers clothes, they act like teenagers (when they go on the beach at night and tell scary stories for example) you get scenes in parties, the mysterious hunter has a hook, this is a classic prop used in horror movies, he is also wearing dark clothes and you can't see his face, this again suits the genre.

5. The soundtrack starts off with music targeted at a young audience and then as the trailer unfolds the song changes to a more aggressive fast paced song that suits the events happening in the trailer, the same goes with dialogue, at the beginning the characters are calm and talk about things with no meaning and then when the trailer gets serious the tone in their voices change to a worried one, they also talk louder and occasionally scream.

8.In the trailer there are a lot of images that make the iconography like the dead body, the hook or the pier at night these elements are all related to horror thrillers

9. The text fits into the thriller, horror, teen movie genre.  because of the more strongly inserted elements in the trailer so that it stands out more than anything else, the music, the locations, the characters all of those make it really easy to identify what the genre of the movie is.

Representation.

1)  white middle classTeenagers are being represented by the text

2) They are represented as being arrogant, reckless, entitiled, attractive and guilty

3) Hollywood which means that it's likely to attract a specific audience, in this case a white young teenage audience

Genre

1) it's a teen horror thriller hybrid, you can tell from all the elements in the trailer, the fact that it's a young cast, the situation suits the genre very well, the fact that the teenagers are doing things that they shouldn't be doing and that there are consequences for their actions. The locations, from a high school party to a creepy pier. The performance from the characters also help identify what genre it is, in this case you have a lot of people screaming, being scared and very concerned over the issue.

Who would produce our film?

Warp Films would be a promising film company to produce our film, because Warp Films is an independent film production company based in the UK. Warp films tend to produce slightly lower concept films like ours.
The magazine ‘Sight & Sound’ would be likely to feature our film in it because it focuses on  slightly smaller British films, which is the category in which our film fits in to and every month they review in detail every film released in the UK.

Sky Fall Marketing Campaign Analysis

In this post we will be looking at the entirety of the James Bond - Skyfall Film. The marketing is portrayed through many different posters, trailors, videos, merchandise, and the original website which includes all the latest news, videos and games.

Below, I have selected a couple of trailers, some of which include the original trailer, the international trailer, and the teaser trailer.

                                                                   The Official Trailer

The official trailor advertises the film by including various clips from different scenes in the movie without revealing the full story. The purpose of a trailer is to expose the plot and to grab people's attention and make them want to watch the film.

                                          The International Trailer

                                          The Teaser Trailer
The teaser trailer is released before the official trailer. The difference between a teaser trailier and the official trailer is that a teaser trailer is a truncated version of a theatrical trailer which intends to entice an audience about an upcoming movie, in this case the James Bond movie. A teaser trailer is usually under two minutes.

Below, I have selected character posters and official posters which each depict different characters from the movie. These posters are the main part of the marketing campaign because they are displayed internationally to gain maximum exposure for the films release.

Character Posters

As shown above, there are a set of character posters for the James Bond film. each of the posters features an individual character from the film. In some character posters, tag lines are included in order to reflect the quality of the character.

Teaser Poster

Many films publish teaser posters as an early promotional poster which includes an important image or design without exposing too many details about the film such as the theme, characters and plot. The purpose of teaser trailers is to alert and generate hype for the film.

http://www.skyfall-movie.com/site/  - The original website

The website of the new Bond movie includes the latest news about the film, a countdown to the Bond film, videos about the movie, games, and information about the film. There are also many promotions about previous movies linked with the film, interviews with the directors of the film and the different types of DVD's which will be made available.
